There are rappers and then, there is Kanye West. A heavyweight that elevates the genre as an unparalleled innovator and creative force, a force that he fully utilized for his performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.
Held at the Brooklyn's Barclays Center, he delivered a haunting and dark performance of "Blood on the Leaves", which samples Nina Simone's 1965 cover of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" and stands as the best song on his No.1 album, 'Yeezus'.
The original 1939 recording dealt a lot with racism and the rise of lynchings, which he brilliantly depicted through his outing by using Steve McQueen's painting, "Lynching Tree", as his backdrop. Not a lot of people could pull of this performance (if any), but this is just one example of why West remains ahead of the class. Watch it beneath:
